Bayside New Haven reviews
David Sedaris
On several tedious drives home in rush hour traffic, Bayside on Public Radio has always made me laugh till I cried. As "funny tears" streamed down my face, I figured other sleepy drivers were noticing me in hysterics and thinking I was crazy. I have always loved listening to him.
This evening, however, I was disappointed and not so amused. I found some of his readings to be hysterically funny, particularly the piece about the poorly dressed airline passengers. But I found much of it to be too "gross" to be funny, and too dark, even for him. The political humor was occasionally funny, but that generally turns me off. Everybody does it. It's old and boring and, I think, cheap humor these days.
What I've always loved about his pieces have been his tales of growing up, his funny, self-deprecating, humble, dry, surprising, and wacky wit. There were moments this evening, but just not many. I was disappointed, and my husband, who wasn't familiar with D. S., just didn't get it at all.
Too bad because Bayside is such a talented writer with such great delivery....usually. But then again, maybe this just wasn't the best. Maybe what I'd always heard on the radio was his best. I suppose I'm glad I went, but it was pretty expensive for being so disappointed...I'd expected so much better. :(
